چکیده

Cardiac anatomy is complex and often difficult to visualize or comprehend. 3D echocardiography is an area undergoing rapid development that represents a natural extension of conventional sonography methods which require integrating a series of 2D image slices to develop a 3D impression of underlying anatomy or pathology. This paper will review some of the basic concepts behind three-dimensional fetal echocardiography and describe some areas of clinical application. Among the many potential advantages of 3D fetal echocardiographic visualization compared to current real-time 2D ultrasound methods are improved visualization of normal and abnormal fetal cardiac structures, and evaluation of complex cardiac structures for which it is difficult to develop a 3D understanding. Reduced patient scanning times could increase the number of patients scanned, increasing operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Standardization of ultrasound examination protocols could lead to uniform examinations decreasing health care costs. Ultimately the improved understanding of cardiac anatomy and function afforded by 3D fetal echocardiography will make it easier for primary care physicians to understand complex cardiac anatomy.

Functional assessment of the fetal heart: a review.

The purpose of this review is to evaluate the current modalities available for the assessment of fetal cardiac function. The unique anatomy and physiology of the fetal circulation are described, with reference to the difference between in-utero and ex-utero life. M-mode, early/atrial ratio, myocardial performance index, three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasound, tissue Doppler including...

Standardization of the first-trimester fetal cardiac examination using spatiotemporal image correlation with tomographic ultrasound and color Doppler imaging.

OBJECTIVE The challenges of the first-trimester examination of the fetal heart may in part be overcome by technical advances in three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound techniques. Our aim was to standardize the first-trimester 3D imaging approach to the cardiac examination to provide the most consistent and accurate display of anatomy. METHODS Low-risk women with normal findings on first-trimester ...

Clinical application of three-dimensional ultrasound in fetal brain assessment.

AIM To clarify the usefulness of three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound in the assessment of the fetal head and brain, according to 3D ultrasound surface reconstruction, multiplanar image analysis, three-dimensional angiography, and volume calculation. METHODS We examined 326 normal fetuses between 10 and 40 weeks of gestation using 3D ultrasound (Voluson, 530D, Medison, Seoul, Korea), mainly with...

Biological Effect of Modern Fetal Ultrasound Techniques on Human Dermal Fibroblast Cells

Background: Diagnostic ultrasound has been used to detect human disease especially fetus abnormalities in recent decades. Although the harmful effects of diagnostic ultrasound on human have not been established so far, several researchers showed it has had bioeffects in cell lines and in experimental animals. Three-dimensional (3D), four-dimensional (4D), and color Doppler sonography are new te...

Methods for prenatal assessment of fetal cardiac function.

Fetal cardiac function is increasingly recognized as a marker of disease severity and prognosis in selected fetal conditions. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been used in experimental (animal) fetal cardiology but the lack of a noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) to trigger image acquisition remains a major limiting factor precluding its application in humans. Fetal medicine speciali...
